Are Tires Covered Under Your Car Warranty?
You may think so when you buy a new car. However, it’s normally the tire manufacturer who offers this coverage, not the dealership. Most of these warranties cover manufacturer’s defects rather than standard wear and tear.
Also, if you want to file a claim, you’ll need to prove that you’ve followed the recommendations regarding rotating and inflating your tires.
Can You Buy a Tire Warranty?
Yes, you can. There are several options, depending on the manufacturer. They’ll cover specific instances like the following.
Road Mileage
Many manufacturers will guarantee a certain amount of usage. However, if you claim this, they’ll look at things like the tire wear pattern. If it looks like you’ve been negligent with maintenance, it can void the warranty.
The company will check that the tires are worn evenly and to the legal depth. Therefore, there must be no more than 2/32 inches of tread left.
You’ll need to prove that you had the tires rotated and maintained properly. You’ll also need your original purchase receipt.
The company will likely pay you for the difference in mileage rather than a full new set.
Road Hazard
Some manufacturers offer this as an optional extra, typically for an extra charge. They’ll keep the protection in place for a limited period and it usually only applies to tires you can repair.
You’re looking at damage from nails, glass, and similar hazards on the road. You’re not covered for driving recklessly or hitting the curb, for example. Also, you’ll need to prove you maintained and inflated the tires properly.
Workmanship and Materials
When you ask, “Are tires covered under warranty?” know that you’ll usually have some protection against defects; that is, if you buy the tires new. Some guarantees can transfer over to the new owner, but you need to be sure that’s the case for you.
These typically last five or six years.

Uniformity
This is usually available on high-performance vehicles but isn’t offered by many manufacturers. It’s usually only for a year and covers you if the tires vibrate too much. You’ll usually need to have a problem with two or more tires to claim this.
Trial Periods
This is not so much a warranty as a money-back guarantee. The manufacturer gives you a period of between 30 and 90 days to use the tires. If you don’t like them, you can trade them in or get a refund.
